Helpful information and tips for playing a disc golf tournament.
When prepping for a tournament there are a few key things to consider, but many things to remember.
Considerations
-
- Weather: It’s pretty simple when you think about it. Cold? Bring layers. Wet? Bring rain gear and a change of clothes – don’t forget socks (you can never pack too many). Hot? Bring ample water, a hat, and sunglasses.
- Course Amenities: Often are no washroom facilities or running water nearby so make sure you pack enough water (and take out whatever containers you brought in) and supplies.
- Accommodations: If you’re looking to compete on a budget, camping is always an option. There are often plenty of places, so shop around for the deals. For those with a bit more money to burn, or who are looking to make a family vacation out of it, cabin style camping, or even a motel/hotel might be available. (Unless you’re in the sticks. If so, see the previous option.)
- Nutrition: Fuel is key to keeping pace throughout major events. (next to that, sleep – don’t party too hard the night before.) Be sure to eat a good breakfast and pack a lunch. Snacks throughout the round are also beneficial. If you’re looking for a jump start in the morning, try a banana. Keep your food choices light in a sense that they won’t sit heavy in the gut – it’ll turn to an anchor and ruin your game!
Things to Remember
-
- Keep your bag light. Don’t bring more discs than you need. Unnecessary weight will wear you out more quickly.
- Sunscreen
- Bug spray or deterrent (clip-ons are great)
- Lightweight portable chair
- Rain Gear: Waterproof jacket and pants, galoshes, Large Umbrella – if it’s pouring out, it’ll help key you dry – and your discs. Change of clothes – waterproof gear doesn’t breathe, depending on how bad it is you could be soaked inside and out.
- Towel(s) to dry your discs, if it rains.
